Fairhaven Girls’ School is a middle school for girls grades 5-8, designed to celebrate and empower the authentic girl by providing a learning environment that honors the unique learning styles of adolescent girls through integrated curriculum, mentoring programs, and community connections.
FGS is located in Bellingham, Washington, beautifully nestled on the bay of the Puget Sound, at the edge of the North Cascades. The city offers countless natural and educational resources, and FGS welcomed our first class in September of 2008!
Fairhaven Girls’ School
... is committed to girl-centered education
that academically challenges our students,
while creating an atmosphere of discovery,
inquiry, entrepreneurship, and kinesthetic
learning design.
Our students receive instruction from
top-notch educators who are experienced and
excited to design curriculum around girls’
unique learning styles, while facilitating a safe
environment where girls can ask questions and
explore their individual academic interests.
Our small class size (1:12) allows
us to tailor our curriculum to the needs and
interests of each and every girl, providing
strong academic foundation, resulting in
increased confidence and aptitude for success.
Nationally, graduates of all-girls middle
schools succeed both socially and
academically in high school,
having bridged the gap between
elementary school and high
school.
We prize
academic success
and encourage
our students to
develop a love
of learning.
Although our
exiting students
are will be equipped
to excel in academically
competitive environments, our
interest in FGS students is more invested
than mere grade point averages and class
ranks. Our programs and curriculum are
designed to educate the whole girl, not
just in the classroom, but also outside of it,
by dedicating time to developing positive
communication skills, resourcefulness,
and an attitude of responsibility
toward both local and global
communities.
Our
curriculum is
student-driven:
we adapt our lessons
to the interests and
needs of the girls in the
classroom. When students
show interest in an idea, they
invite learning on that topic, and
we are eager to pick up their cues!
Our lessons are project-driven and
focused on kinesthetic learning; in other
words, we learn by doing. For example, the
study of plant growth and development provides
lessons in biology, and the baking soda in a
cooking experiment offers lessons in chemistry.
Girls begin to realize that the natural world is
full of math equations, history, minerals, and
poetry, and our curriculum utilizes these natural
resources in attaining our educational goals.
The over arching goal of Fairhaven Girls’
School is to provide opportunities for girls to
solidify their knowledge, expand their interests
and become confident, strong, capable young
women ready to face new challenges in high
school and beyond.
Fairhaven Girls' School is a Washington State Non-profit Organization and is governed by a board of enthusiastic volunteers who work together to develop our school’s future goals and the logistics of our learning environment.
