FGS Curriculum Overview Fall 2008 Winter 2009 Spring 2009
Spring Interim
The weeks before spring break will allow time for independent study, community internships and field study activities as well as reading, writing and math workshops.
Spring Term “Creative Synergy: Ventures in Global Stewardship”
Studies during spring term will include explorations of human anatomy, plant biology and ecosystems. We will discuss global events and look closely at contemporary challenges and pursue opportunities for active citizenship. Our studies in literacy and math will continue throughout the term.
A major part of spring term is the designing and creating of our Capstone Projects. This is where it all comes together. Students will combine the skills and concepts they have been learning with their personal interests, concerns, learning strengths and creative styles. Although the projects will have the common theme of global stewardship, that will look very different for different learners.
It will be the intent of the projects to make an impact outside of the school – perhaps benefiting the Bellingham community, but also with the vision to ultimately make a difference on a global level. This is an opportunity for students to be a part of something with big potential. They experience firsthand the synergy that comes from the combined ideas of strong minds aiming to create solutions to global challenges.
A culminating event for spring term will be a showcase of the Capstone Projects in our Ventures in Global Stewardship Exposition at school. Following the exposition, many of the projects will be presented to the community.
