FGS Programs: Mastery Curriculum

Arts/Humanities Program
The Arts/Humanities Program at The Fairhaven Girls’ School encompasses fine arts, crafts and folklore. The students progress through the Arts Program in developmental stages as follows:
  • 5th year students are encouraged to thoroughly explore all art areas and mediums.
  • 6th year students are encouraged to focus their studies in 2-3 art areas/mediums, selecting their personal Art/Humanities Area Specialty for further in depth study in the 7th and 8th years of school.
  • Each student receives individual and group instruction in their Art/Humanities Area Specialty and develops a “Senior” project that reflects a depth of knowledge in an aspect of the Art/Humanities Area Specialty. This project is presented to the public in some form such as a performance, recital, art show, published writing, etc.

Math/Science Program
The Science Program at the Fairhaven Girls’ School complements the Arts/Humanities Program and provides opportunities for student exploration in the fields of Natural Science and Technology. A similar pattern of investigation to that of the Arts/Humanities Program is followed in careful coordination with the Washington State Education Guidelines for grades 5-8.

Technology Program
The Technology curriculum will be entirely driven by the quarter themes: Beginnings and Connections, Power: Forces and Change, Creative Synergy: Ventures in Global Stewardship. Keyboarding, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, digital photography and video, web design, and other creative software will be used to support the integration of technology into the overall FGS curriculum. The school year will begin with units on internet safety, literacy, copyright laws and ethics in order to guide students as they proceed through the year.

Music Program
The music curriculum at Fairhaven Girls’ School will include a variety of music instruction opportunities including instrumental and vocal music. FGS adjunct music faculty and access to group performance opportunities through community and school ensembles will also support student music interest and talent.

Entrepreneurship Program
Educational systems are currently preparing girls for jobs that have not been invented yet. Fairhaven Girls’ School believes that entrepreneurship is a life-skill and as such, draws on the ability to problem-solve, think critically and creatively. Fairhaven Girls’ School will provide girls with opportunities to ‘shadow’ women in our community to explore areas of professional and technical interest. The entrepreneurship program will also incorporate concepts of personal financial literacy that will further support the long-term wellness of girls in our community.

Health & Wellness Program
Adolescence is a time of physical, emotional, and social changes, and at FGS we provide a safe space to discuss whatever questions or concerns arise for girls as they negotiate these exciting years. Our health and wellness program focuses on building a positive body knowledge and encourages girls to be aware of and empowered by their own natural, good, and healthy bodies.

Specialty Instructors
Classroom instructors, community instructors and Artists/Specialists provide instruction in the Arts and Sciences Programs. The Fairhaven Girls’ School also offers language instruction in Latin (written), French, Spanish, Italian, and German. Languages taught will vary by year. FGS has chosen French for the focus world language for the 2008-2009 school year.

Inter-session
During the months of December and March, inter-sessions will provide opportunities to explore topics outside the scope of the regular academic curriculum. These workshops will also incorporate mentorship from area businesses and local artists/specialists, community service projects and student driven research.

Summer Camp
Girls’ Camp will be an annual event in Bellingham, Washington with the goal to grow from a one-week camp (2007) to a 4-week camp by 2010. Girls’ Camp 2007 featured hands-on science and math activities in chemistry, physics and biology. FGS Summer Programs include Girls' Camp 2008, FGS Bridge Program and PetalPoint Camp.

PetalPoint Store (Entrepreneurship Lab)
The PetalPoint Store is an “Entrepreneurship Lab” featuring the artwork and creations of girls. The PetalPoint Store will exist both as a ‘brick & mortar’ storefront within the FGS campus, as well as online as an e-commerce store. This “Entrepreneurship Lab” is an important component of our economic literacy program.

Girls’ Community Workshops
A founding goal of Fairhaven Girls’ School is to serve as a community resource for parents, educators and community members. Fairhaven Girls’ School is committed to providing Girls’ Community Workshops to students through cooperative programs with the Parent-Teacher Associations throughout Whatcom County.
